Key Points

  • A new power and wastewater infrastructure study has been announced in the towns of Maine and Union.
  • The study is funded by a $500,000 grant from Empire State Development’s Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracts program.
  • The study will seek to identify infrastructure upgrades necessary for future developments, including the proposed Broome Technology Park.

A new $500,000 grant will help launch a study of power and wastewater infrastructure needs in the towns of Maine and Union, potentially fueling economic growth in Broome County.

The grant, awarded to the Broome County Industrial Development Agency through Empire State Development’s Focused Attraction of Shovel-Ready Tracts program, will focus primarily on the area north of Johnson City. The study is expected to identify wastewater and power infrastructure upgrades which will lay the groundwork for future economic development.

The grant was announced in the latest round of FAST NY program funding, which aims to help upstate New York communities establish development-ready sites to attract new investors.

According to an Aug. 19 press release, the engineering studies will support Broome Technology Park, a proposed development which could bring $1 billion of economic development to the county, by upgrading the power capacity from NYSEG to the proposed development. The 526-acre park could host businesses in advanced electronics, semiconductors test packaging and related industries, as well as life sciences and agricultural processing.

The study will also seek to improve wastewater infrastructure near the Oakdale Commons corridor. In a statement, Executive Director of the Agency Stacey Duncan said the study will pave the way for future development in the towns of Maine and Union.

“This investment allows us to move from vision to action,” said Duncan. “Infrastructure capacity is the foundation of any development, from affordable housing to major manufacturing facilities. Our goal is to stay one step ahead of the needs of growing communities, clearing a pathway for new jobs, taxes and amenities that benefit all.”

The IDA also recently announced it is working on a similar Master Facilities Plan for Endicott's Huron Campus. The comprehensive plan will create a roadmap for needed improvements at the site of the former IBM campus, allowing it to attract more companies and investment.
